Sylvia Ann Russell grows up in 1930s’ Georgetown, a young woman with a good education but few social advantages. This is a world where men seek either respectable wives from ‘good’ families, or vulnerable young women to exploit. When Sylvia’s father dies in scandalous circumstances, her life becomes fraught with such threats.
