The book's episodes depict the ruthless and inhumane attack upon the kingdom of Yugoslavia, which within the raging war in Europe remained a haven of peace and prosperity before being devastated by the cruel bombing of Belgrade on 6 April 1941. The massive incursion into the kingdom of Yugoslavia was an unforeseen episode which turned the tide of war. The book's principal heroine is a plucky freelance journalist, a driven figure, inhabiting a world of her own. By force of her personality and her ruthless activism and critical attacks upon the highly corrupt regime, the Regency, never shrinking from danger, by using the power of the press and her own network of collaborators, she raises the awareness of the public to impending high treason. When the government signs a pact with Germany, all hell breaks loose with far flung consequences.
