In ‘Wolf Brand,’ the ordinarily peaceful River Junction community is divided into factions. The Midland and Southwestern Railroad brought in farmers to clear the land with the promise they could purchase the land for a dollar an acre. Now the railroad has changed the terms, asking $15 an acre and hiring men to evict the farmers if they don’t pay. The ranchers are divided in their sympathies, some wanting the farmers evicted, and others believing the farmers are being cheated. The situation becomes explosive when two of the railroad marshals are shot.
In ‘Doom Patrol,’ Leek Jaeger and Frank Cutts, owners of the J Bar C, frame Buck Comstock for murder. The two men with their violent crew want to take over all three of the fertile valleys in the area, starting with Buck Comstock’s Half Moon Ranch. Buck’s sentence is twenty-five years, but Leek Jaeger promises him he can get the sentence reduced if Buck will sign over his ranch. Instead Buck escapes from jail. He may be a fugitive, but now at least he is free to wage his own war against his adversaries and secure true justice, a struggle in which he will not be alone.
