The cause for American democracy is, in great measure, the cause for mankind, which is what Abe Lincoln referred to in 1862 when he told Congress, "We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth."25 Perhaps the U.S. can increase the extent to which we inspire people in other parts of the world, leading by setting a good example that others can admire.
