Friends and Family in People’s Park

Rebecca Ann Ferree

Friends and Family in People’s Park is a picture book about a brother and sister living in a loving and caring Foster Care family. The children are in foster care until their mother can take them back or they are adopted. The foster parents take their foster children to a park to socialize with other children, who represent children from different races: African American family, Asian family and Latino family. The brother and sister, who are Caucasian, become friends with these children from different backgrounds. After meeting the different families of all of their friends, the brother and sister talk with their foster parents about how they are all similar in having loving and caring families. The brother and sister realize they won’t have a father like their friends have if they return to their mother. Their foster parents take them for a walk through People’s Park where they see many kinds of parents with their families. Some families they see have single parents; some families have parents with different gender roles; and there’s a family with parents from different races. Just as they saw with their friends’ families, they again saw families with different parent situations share common similarities of care and loving as they come to People’s Park to have a good time. The foster parents also help their foster children by introducing them to a couple who want to adopt them. The introduction and activities planned by the foster parents, for the brother and sister and couple to get to know one another, takes place in People’s Park. The brother and sister are shown transitioning to their new home. They celebrate with their friends and say good bye as they leave with their adoptive parents promising they will return to see everyone again at the People’s Park.
