The story introduces two women. Beth, a narcissistic and spoiled yet neglected child. bent on her own destruction. Nettie, a light skinned black woman, living a quiet unassuming life but hiding a secret past that can destroy her.
The two women meet as a hurricane rolls through Mississippi. Drenching the state in a blanket of rain and wind, a very pregnant Beth resolves to flee her brutal husband. Gripped in painful labor, she escapes the dilapidated shack that has held her prisoner the past year. She finds haven in Nettie’s home where she delivers the baby. Beth refuses to acknowledge Pearlie, the child born of a hated husband and regretful past.
A shared history of pain and abuse draw the two women together and bonding them in a friendship born of like scars. Eventually, Beth slips away, leaving behind Pearlie.
