The original idea for this tribute to our parents came about after a conversation in which my daughter-in-law was present. Usually, Charmaine is very involved in discussions, but this time she had nothing to offer, for we were talking about my mother. She never knew either of my parents. She and my son, Jerrold married in 1999. Our mom passed in 1988, our father, four years later in 1992. I can’t help but remember how uncomfortable she looked. Soon thereafter, I heard a still small voice direct me to do something about her not knowing. As I thought about it, I realized that this reality was true for others who either married later into the family, or were born after my parents passed away. I was told to write down memories, but not just about my mother though. God later told me that I had to include my dad. I realized quickly, that I didn’t want to take this writing journey alone. I wanted my siblings, extended family, and friends’ involvement as well. There are so many memories that would have been lost had we not written them down. We realize that our recollections will be etched in stone for years after our own passing. They will be passed down to others who will be aware of our parents’ wisdom, character, rearing practices, and definite unfeigned love for us.
