Originally published in 1902 and never reprinted, The Night Chant contains one of the few extensive descriptions of this important ceremony. Matthews spent over twenty years working with hatathli, or singers, to record the many songs and rites that comprise the intricate Night Chant. Matthews’s sensitive study has significance for all modern readers with an interest in Navajo culture.
