This story is about a young southern boy who befriended an old German man. The old man and his wife lived with their son who was part of Dr. Werner Von Braun’s rocket team at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The German family moved to the nearby picturesque farming community of Big Cove, Alabama. The old German man roamed the countryside almost daily, always wearing a backpack and an old floppy hat. Rumors ran rampant that he was a spy and that the Germans might invade Big Cove. Some of the country store’s front porch loafers thought it was too soon after WWII to trust the Germans. The only person he was able to make friends with was his neighbor’s young son.
