Introduction by the author: “Like many book projects this one took a different direction then originally intended. I started out with the idea of writing a book on military knowledge management for military knowledge management professionals. A debate in late fall of 2010 on the U.S. Army Knowledge Management Network (KMNet) online Community of Practice about the direction of knowledge management in the U.S. Army changed both my intention and the direction of this book. It was through this debate that I realized that military leaders at all levels have a far more pressing need, especially in time of war, to understand and successfully implement rapid knowledge transfer operations in their units. Early on I decided to make this a free eBook instead of a commercial "for sale” book. Doing this is my professional contribution to the U.S. military in time of war. This book is not meant to be an academic text on the subject of military knowledge transfer, but a practical guide book designed to transfer my first hand experiential knowledge about military knowledge transfer operations directly to you as a military leader, for use in your unit. This experiential knowledge was gained while I was at the Battle Command Knowledge System (BCKS) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas from 2005-2010 as a contract facilitator and senior knowledge manager. It was at BCKS that we experimented and found what works, and what doesn’t, and under what conditions. I have deliberately kept this book non-technical so you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to make use of it. If you apply what you learn here in a common sense way to your unit it will make your unit far more successful at what it does than a unit that doesn’t, and as a bonus it will also substantially improve human communications throughout your organization as well.“
