Born a stutter, with dyslexia and a slight palsied condition, Al suffered feelings of rejection both at home and neighborhood. His learning abilities were limited. He left home at age 14, to work at a nearby ranch and lived in a bunk house on the ranch. Al cheated the icy hands of death on three different occasions.
