This book was written in a plain, straightforward and truthful manner, to tell how a big and brawny man, with many of the vices of his sex and years and a few of the virtues, went from the backwoods of Pennsylvania to the South Pole and found, in a volcanic or hot water wilderness, an isolated oasis of tropic warmth and rare fertility, containing strange survivals from a bygone geologic age, and inhabited by a remnant of a former continental people, enlightened, white-skinned and of surpassing beauty, but voiceless, a perfect but petticoated paradise, where big and beautiful women ruled and little and learned men obeyed in a marvelous communistic government.
