He aye shall have the warmest seat, We’ll tak him his auld elbow chair,? An’ you an’ I thegither, luve, Will never let him sorrow mair. Then gin ye dinna wear a crown,? Or walk in flauntin’ robes o’ pride,? Ye shall be happy as a queen,? Though ye be anely Donald’s bride! A DAY IN A VILLAGE CHUECHYABD. The morning sun was warm and bright As summer sun can be, And birds, made happy by its light, Breathed their wild minstrelsy. The dew'drops lingered on the flowers, - As if the gems would say Why should not we, as Nature’s own, Enjoy the holiday? A matron with an infant boy, The youthful mother too, And sponsors, on the churchyard path Their softening shadows threw. A DAY IN A VILLAGE CHURCHYARD. 21 Then, sprinkled at the holy font? The benediction giv'n? The unconscious babe received a name, And heritage in heav'n. Who can describe the hopes and fears Of that fond anxious one, Or analyze the tear that fell Upon her first-born son!
