As a founding member of the White Rose student resistance in Munich during World War II, Sophie Scholl helped write, produce and distribute thousands of anti-Nazi leaflets. Her boyfriend, Captain Fritz Hartnagel, wrote to Sophie accounts of SS and German army atrocities while fighting on both fronts. Caught on opposite sides of war, both Fritz and Sophie were changed by their correspondence. With Fritz’s actual letters translated here into English for the first time, their relationship demonstrates the moral complexity of living in a totalitarian society and is ultimately a love story.
