Blaxton Hill is haunted. Everyone has heard the stories - everyone, it seems, except Richard Wentworth, who stops one night to give a lift to a pale young woman waiting passively by the roadside.
When she vanishes from his moving vehicle, the shock sends him careening off the road. His physical injuries, however, are slight beside the affront to his world view.
He soon learns that his erstwhile passenger is said to be the ghost of a tragic bride-to-be who died in a motor accident on the hill many years ago.
And when she continues to haunt his dreams, imploring him to 'take the ring', he feels compelled to find out what it all means.
But as his preoccupation with the girl on the hill grows, so do the concerns of those closest to him. Is he losing his mind, as some suspect; or is the ghost girl real and, as he comes to believe, in desperate need of his help?
