In the late 1970s Joe Angel Angelino, now a family man and career Navy pilot at South Weymouth Naval Air Station outside of Boston, struggles with post-traumatic stress from his aerial combat tours in Vietnam, which begins to intrude upon his military performance and family life. He is irritable and shaken by nightmares that spring up from the long repressed stress of over 300 combat missions, including being shot down over North Vietnam. Although he and his RIO officer Paul were rescued deep in the jungle by Marines, Paul was injured permanently, never fully regaining his health. After many years have passed, Paul and Angel are reunited at a nearby Boston veterans’ hospital. Through Angel’s personal struggles and his battle with the military bureaucracy, Angel seeks and finds an innovative way to help traumatized homeless vets, organizing a group of vets to rebuild a vintage P-51 fighter plane to fly across America and raise the consciousness of the public regarding the forgotten Vietnam veterans who continue to suffer.
