As the world warms, with the International community supinely sitting on the sidelines, as carbon emissions inexorably rise, as governments worldwide largely ignore the most challenging issues of our time, what does the future hold for our children and grandchildren? In this book the unfolding disasters of the 21st century - global heating, peak oil and the looming energy crisis - form a backdrop to the story of four generations increasingly struggling to survive in a steadily more volatile and dangerous world. Opening on the eve of the millennium, when life is still abnormally normal, we meet John and Mary, a middle aged couple on holiday on the Channel Island of Jersey. Fast forward a hundred years and their great great grandson Jason reaches the island now strangely silent and desolate, in a post apocalyptic world where life has been reduced to the grim imperatives of survival. In between, generations of the Shearer family are rocked by a series of events that expose just how thin is the veneer of civilisation in a globalised world built on the crumbling pillars of cheap oil and electricity on demand.
