Since moving to Davis fifty years ago, Doug Waterman has been privileged to indulge his interest in cycling as a member of the Davis Bicycle Club. His adventures have led him to the amazing wonder of Lake Tahoe, a ten-day trek through the rugged barrenness and beauty of the Southwest to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the winding roads of the Pacific Coast from Jenner to San Diego, Hwy 70 up the Feather River Canyon in the Sierra Nevada of California, and the agricultural flat lands of Yolo County, California. Doug pedaled each one of these trips without the company of a cell phone or someone to sag him. Now in this book about his Route 66 adventure, which he calls 66 on 66 in celebration of his 66th birthday, Doug invites us to ride the 2300 miles from Santa Monica to Chicago. His story weaves the fascinating history of The Mother Road with the challenges and rewards he encounters - from violent weather and crowded two-lane highways and city streets to interesting and changing landscapes, and the wonderful friends, old and new, that offer encouragement. Doug stays the course while raising funds for Habitat for Humanity.
