The time is the distant future. A mining ship has returned from an extended tour of the outer reaches and finds the Earth is all but destroyed. Some sort of cataclysm has descended and the sun itself no longer shines upon the land. The crew of the Canter discovers a way to clear the air, to allow in sunlight, but a suffocating mist still covers most of the land, a mist that houses creatures of horror who seek to dominate all that come near them.

Small pockets of humanity remain, but it is like the stone age.
