Nel corso del ventesimo secolo l'Italia ha dovuto affrontare due conflitti devastanti ma, pur essendo piu viva e piu prossima la tragica esperienza della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, gli italiani ed in modo particolare i veneti hanno una speciale considerazione per gli accadimenti della Prima, quella che i piu, soprattutto i "veci", ricordano come la Grande Guerra. Gli eventi di questo conflitto interessarono, seppure in modalita diverse, i piccoli centri rurali cosi come le grandi citta di allora, arrivando a toccare profondamente anche il territorio comunale di Quarto d'Altino, con le sue frazioni di Trepalade, Portegrandi ed Altino.
