The book has as its heart one of the most infamous episodes of Japanese history: the Thailand-Burma Death Railway in World War II, and is dedicated to the author’s father who worked on the construction of the railway. The Chair of the Man Booker judging panel, A.C. Grayling described the book as ‘profound and often harrowing’.
